The Horn-Pacquiao bout on July 2 was Australia's biggest boxing match and showcased Brisbane to a global audience, but the city council has withdrawn its pre-commitment of financial support until it knows Pacquiao's intentions.

Cr Quirk said he would meet with Dean Lonergan of Duco Events on Monday to make the council's position clear and arrange a telephone hook-up with promoter Bob Arum to get word from the Pacquiao camp.

In August, the council's Finance and Economic Committee was given a detailed presentation of the economic benefits the July 2 fight brought to the city.

It is understood the council spent more than $1 million promoting the fight between Horn, the Australian WBO welterweight world champion, and Pacquiao.

A council officer said the highlights of the battle for the city's economy included an 80 per cent rise in revenue for hotels on the Sunday night and the record-breaking 51,026 spectators, 36 per cent of whom from outside Queensland.

Despite council boasts just weeks ago of the economic benefits, Cr Quirk said funding was withdrawn until Pacquiao committed to a rematch in Brisbane.

"I need to know we definitely have a fighter coming from the Philippines to fight Brisbane's world champion Jeff Horn and I need to know that fighter is Manny Pacquiao," he said.

"I'm not going to shadow box the fight promoters - I want some straight answers to the question of is Manny in the boxing ring in Brisbane in November or is he in retirement.

"We don't know at this time and I'm withdrawing any financial support until Manny fronts up and tells us his intentions."

But Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk questioned whether Cr Quirk's comments were helping, urging the Lord Mayor to "come to the party".

"I need the Lord Mayor to get into Jeff Horn's corner with me and with the rest of Queensland so we can secure that rematch here," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"Time is of the essence, and I don't think it's helping with the comments the Lord Mayor has made.

"We're fighting hard to get it, we're in Jeff Horn's corner, and it's about time the Lord Mayor made it clear, is he supporting this rematch or is he not?"

Ms Palaszczuk met with Horn, Mr Lonergan and Tourism Minister Kate Jones on Saturday.

"Queensland is in it to secure the rematch fight here in Queensland and discussions are progressing incredibly well," she said.

Between January 1 to July 10 there were 9872 media items covering the Battle for Brisbane in Australian media, to the value of about $40,267,276.

The fight was broadcast in more than 34 countries, including in Britain, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, India, Europe and the Middle East.

A council officer told the Finance Committee the council had been told the hype and vibe before the Battle for Brisbane was bigger than what was felt in Las Vegas ahead of a big fight.

"They really felt that, the city [of Brisbane] embraced it," the officer said.

"There was very strong, positive feedback from all the international visitors that came."

On August 2, finance chairman Krista Adams said the fight was the gift that kept on giving and was more than the city could have hoped for.

"It was absolutely insane, it was absolutely amazing," Cr Adams said.

"Those results show why we put in the effort to get events like this, it was just absolutely outstanding."

Cr Quirk said the Battle of Brisbane only happened because of strong financial support from the council.

"At the moment it's like backing a horse for the Melbourne Cup that's not a certain starter.

"You need time to promote major events to get full value for the investment and November is not far away."

It was understood Cr Quirk would provide a statement following his meeting with Mr Lonergan.
