The incident, on Scotts Road within the National Park, is understood to have occurred over the October long weekend.
“This dumping incident on Scotts Road has been reported to the NPWS,” an Office of Environment and Heritage said.
“NPWS has arranged to meet with Port Stephens Council to investigate”.
NPWS recently received an Environment Protection Authority (EPA) grant to assist with waste removal, improved signage, public education and installation of barriers and gates in the Port Stephens area.
“This is unfortunately not an uncommon occurrence in the area with substantial efforts and cost expended to clean up illegal dumping,” the spokseperson said.
“If the person who dumped the rubbish, can be located they face being directed to clean it up and fines of at least $300 [and] up to several thousand dollars.”
People should report illegal dumping to police or the EPA on 131 555.
