A woman was behind the wheel of a small hatchback when the tree was toppled in strong winds.
Tomaree and Port Stephens NSW SES units were among the the emergency services called to scene, along with the Anna Bay and Williamtown/Salt Ash Fire Brigades.
Port Stephens Council was also called to help clear the lanes, which required chainsaws and heavy earthmoving equipment. The car was then able to be “driven clear” of the tree limbs.
“The driver was shaken but very lucky not to have been injured,” a spokeswoman from the Tomaree NSW State Emergency Service said.
The southbound lanes remained closed until nearly 2pm. In the meantime police diverted southbound traffic through Marsh Road.
It’s the second tree the Tomaree unit has called to in the past 24 hours.
Shortly after 9.30pm on Thursday a tree was felled on Gan Gan Road at One Mile but residents had removed the tree before the SES could respond.
