The zone championships are open to athletes from U7s through to U17s, with athletes from all age groups except for the U7s progressing to the regional championships.
Organisers are expecting a huge turn-out with some of the best athletes contesting a range of track and field events including the sprints, hurdles, high and long jumps, discus and the shot put.
“We are expecting around 400 athletes from 11 clubs in the Port Hunter zone, which includes Raymond Terrace, Nelson Bay and Medowie athletics clubs,” said secretary Deidre Hall.
“”These championship always produce some exceptional performances and we welcome as many spectators as possible to cheer on the athletes.”
The Raymond Terrace centre, which caters for athletes from five years of age to masters, will conduct its final meet for 2018 on Friday, December 14. Currently, the club’s oldest member is 75 years of age.
“We compete on Saturday mornings right up to late March, and our athletes range in ability from beginners to Australian representatives. We emphasise the Little Athletics motto of ‘Run For Fun’, encouraging athletes to improve on their own performances,” said Hall.
The club also conducts an annual Wallaroo Fun Run on the third Sunday of May, with competitors travelling from as far afield as Sydney, Port Macquarie and Singleton to compete.
