Cr McWilliams and Cr Roberts were unopposed in running for the positions for another year.
The positions are determined by councillors, who each year nominate who they want to see as mayor and deputy mayor.
If a position had more than one candidate nominated the election would go to a vote or ballot.
The method of voting would be determined by the council’s general manager, Glenn Handford.
This is the seventh year Cr McWilliams had successfully run for mayor and the third year for Cr Roberts as deputy.
Cr Roberts said the councillors worked ‘‘incredibly well together’’ and that the election was necessary to select a ‘‘leader or two among equals’’.
‘‘There’s just a wonderful atmosphere at the moment in council in the way we work things out and try and reach a consensus,’’ Cr Roberts said.
‘‘I appreciate the opportunity [to serve as deputy mayor] once again.’’
Cr Roberts said that running for the position unopposed was a sign councillors were confident in their leaders.
Cr McWilliams said the council had ‘‘turned around’’ since she was elected as mayor in 2008.
‘‘It was once a controversial council,’’ she said.
‘‘Now everyone walks out of that [meeting] room and we’re still friends. That’s the difference.’’
In her time as mayor the council had become financially, ecologically and environmentally stable, she said.
