Port Stephens Historical Society has received two grants totalling $20,600 to install a walking trail, 10 signs and two benches in the shape of submarines.
"We have received a $10,000 grant from the federal government and a $10,600 grant from the state government to commemorate the 100th anniversary [1916-2016] of maritime contribution in Nelson Bay," historical society president Dennis Corr said.
"We have plans for 10 interpretative signs across the Bay and two commemorative seats, one at Everitt Park in Soldiers Point and the second at Bob Cairns reserve at Wanda Beach."
Paterson MP Bob Baldwin welcomed the government's contribution to preserving and promoting the Port's maritime heritage.
"In addition to the $10,000 provided to the Port Stephens Historical Society, another $2700 will go to the Clarence Town and District Historical Museum," Mr Baldwin said.
"The funding will support a mariner's heritage trail in Nelson Bay and the Clarence Town funding will support display showcases and presentation signage."
Mr Baldwin said the next round of funding applications would open in February 2016.
