While the $100,000 for the largest Pacific Blue Marlin over 236kg did not go off, angler Adam Hoey was close.
Hoey, on the Newcastle and Port Stephens Game Fish Club boat Calypso skippered by Tim Dean, caught the largest marlin of the weekend, weighing in at 231.4kg. He caught it with a 60kg line on Saturday.
Nathan Yule, on Rocket, caught the second heaviest blue marlin of the tournament on Saturday – 209.1kg on a 60kg line.
According to the club, 166 boats and 762 anglers took part in this year’s Shootout. Between them, they reportedly tagged and released 152 black marlin, 90 blue marlin, 43 striped marlin and seven spearfish.
Lake Macquarie angler Paul Marshall said the weekend was “awesome” and thanked the game fishing club for a “job well done” in running the weekend tournament.
He also thanked Neil Grieves for his tireless work on the radio, in particular his sked reports.
“Neil has gone out of way for past 30 odd years to report all the skeds and made radio reports,” Marshall said. “An excellent job. Well done.”
From Thursday, NSW Game Fish Association (GFA) will host its 55th annual Interclub Tournament, which includes the Lyndy Grieves Memorial Ladies Day.
