Bay Doctors offers the broad range of general GP services with a special interest in women’s health and skin cancer. Dr Yapp is completing a Diploma in Skin Cancer Surgery and will offer everything from skin cancer checks to diagnosis and treatment.
The practice is located in Cinema Mall in Nelson Bay and will operate three days a week while in start-up phase with the intention of going full-time as uptake increases.
“The focus at Bay Doctors will be on personalised one-on-one GP care,” Dr Yapp said. “The key to quality personalised health care is to have that long-term relationship with your GP and see the GP of your choice.
“A smaller practice allows you to encourage those relationships and it’s a win-win for both patient and GP.”

Knowing your GP saves time having to explain your condition, particularly for complex patients.
“They walk in the door, they know you, you know them, you pick up from where you left,” Dr Yapp explained.
“That is reassuring for the patient because they know that you, as their GP, understand what’s impacting on them.
“I really enjoy getting to know patients and sharing their experiences.”
In many cases, non-medical factors can influence health care and diagnosis, and a relationship with your GP is very beneficial.
“If you know the patient, you know what they’ve tried, what might work, their social circumstances, partners, children, their financial situation – awareness of all those things can play a role in what can assist them.
“Explaining that time and again to new doctors is frustrating. Having someone who knows is really helpful.”
Dr Yapp has lived and worked in Nelson Bay since 2004 and her son attends primary school locally.
“My books are currently open,” Dr Yapp said. “Down the track, I hope to work with two or three more doctors and teach the next generation of GPs in the practice.”
