The 24th typhoon of the season made landfall from the west about 8pm local time on Sunday and began moving toward Tokyo around midnight, bringing in its wake heavy rain and strong winds.

It was, however, sunny in capital on Monday morning as Trami had already moved to the northeast of Japan toward the Pacific at 95 km/h, packing winds of up to 126 km/h and gusts of up to 180 km/h, according to the Japanese Meteorological Agency.

At 12.50 pm the typhoon was over the ocean about 200 km east of the port city of Nemuro on the northern island of Hokkaido.

According to public broadcaster NHK, a truck driver was killed in a landslide in the western town of Tottori while another man reportedly drowned in a river in Yamanashi, west of Tokyo.

A 67-year-old woman, who was dragged through an irrigation channel in southwestern Miyazaki, as well as a 46-year-old security guard in Koka in Shiga Prefecture in central Japan, are missing.

More than a thousand flights were cancelled countrywide and another 249 were called off on Monday, according to NHK.

Kansai international airport in Osaka, the third busiest airport in Japan, suspended services on Sunday and resumed on Monday.

About 1.3 million homes suffered power cuts on Monday morning due to infrastructural damages throughout the country, including some 410,000 in Tokyo and nearby areas.

Train services were also suspended in different parts of the country as well as in the outskirts of Tokyo but resumed on Monday.

More than 3.8 million residents in 23 of the 47 prefectures of the Japanese archipelago were affected.
