The delegation will be dispatched as part of a $5 million aid package to help with Friday's disaster in central Sulawesi, which killed more than 1200 people.

Australia is considering further support for the disaster, with the death toll expected to rise and millions affected by the crisis.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Indonesia had also been offered defence force assets.

"All Australians stand with our Indonesian friends and neighbours as they are going through what I can only imagine is the most horrific of times," Mr Morrison told reporters in Perth on Wednesday.

Foreign Minister Marise Payne said the disaster area was being hampered by soil effectively turning into quicksand, making movement difficult.

"We will be working very closely with the Indonesian government to make sure that the support we are providing is highly targeted," she told reporters in Washington overnight.

Senator Payne has been in contact with her Indonesian counterpart Retno Marsudi and Mr Morrison is continuing talks with President Joko Widodo about possible further support.

"That will be considered on a case-by-case basis."

Australia will also provide humanitarian emergency relief supplies including shelter, water and hygiene kits.

The latest package is on top of $500,000 given to the Indonesian Red Cross for the most obvious emergency aid needs, such as tarpaulins.

Officials fear the death toll from the 7.5 magnitude quake will rise once they gain access to remote areas largely cut off since Friday.
