The Port is mourning the loss of a long serving historian Lorraine Cottam, of Boat Harbour, who passed away last month at the age of 83 after a long illness.

Mrs Cottam was a dedicated member of both the Port Stephens Family History Society and the Port Stephens Council Heritage Committee.
As a dedicated member of the historical society, Mrs Cottam played an integral role in having a number of publications released during her tenure as president.
Her most notable being Bob's Farm Cadre Camp; Refugees from Timor to Port Stephens during World War II in 2014.
The book was made possible through the cooperation of Chance Yeow, who was just a child when he and his family, plus about 600 other Portuguese and Timorese people, lived at the Bobs Farm refugee camp during World War II.
Mr Yeow told the Examiner at the time that “after a conversation with Lorraine Cottam, from the historical society, I soon learned that the refugee camp's history would live on. I thought all of this was lost. I thought I was the only person who knew about the camp”.
Mrs Cottam also contributed to another well known book for the society, A History of the Tilligerry Peninsula.
