Steven Fenwick, from Anna Bay, was last seen walking with a woman near the intersection of Fullerton and Meredith streets in Stockton about 2.30am on Thursday, January 31.
The woman and Mr Fenwick parted company, however police said the pair planned to meet at an oval in Stockton.
It is believed Mr Fenwick decided to walk through bushland behind the Stockton Centre to a Nelson Bay Road address.
Mr Fenwick did not show up at the oval as planned.
He has not been seen or heard from since, however, police said “personal items” were found in bushland adjacent to Fullerton Street.
Officers from Newcastle Police District were notified of Mr Fenwick’s disappearance about 6pm on Thursday and a search involving police with assistance from the dog unit was launched.
The search was picked up again about 8am on Friday.
Newcastle officers are being assisted by PolAir, police rescue and the Marine Area Command in their search for Mr Fenwick.
