Youth Express Indigenous Advancement Strategy and STEAM Shack initiatives have secured funding through the Port Stephens Council Aboriginal Engagement Fund in 2018.
The funding will support industry facilitators for the “STEAM Quest”, a 1 day camp on Tuesday March 12 running from 9am-3pm.
The day aims to support 150 young people from Karuah Public School and Aboriginal youths from partner schools at Irrawang High School and Hunter River High School.
The students will engage in a series of robotics, coding, mini drones and virtual reality (VR) workshops.
The event serves to highlight how the strength of partnerships can be used to create real impact in raising the aspirations and skills of younger people by providing the right support.
Facilitators are industry trained experts from Hover UAV (Drones) and Broader Learning (Robotics and Coding) who bring their skills and knowledge and involve the students in relative interactive activities.
The Youth Express Indigenous Advancement Strategy is an innovative program aimed to support young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to remain engaged in education.
Activities include workshops and cultural sessions that build capacity and confidence to explore identity and culture.
Students learn valuable skills to assist them to gain employment post school.
This highlights the opportunity to engage with STEAM technology prior to leaving school as an added advantage!
This wonderful support enhances how our young people engagement in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) through fun and interactive activities.
The STEAM Shack initiative was started in 2018 by Youth Express and is an available mobile resource that brings robotics, drones, VR and coding equipment to schools and community events across the Hunter and Newcastle.
Youth Express is a registered not-for-profit organisation and DGR (deductible gift recipient) charity that has supported youth engagement in education, community and work across the Hunter since 1993.
Funding through sponsorship is needed to ensure that the STEAM Shacks continue as a shared resource across the region.
