All too often these patients take too long to present to their optometrist and have treatment. Vision that could have been saved is lost due to this delay in seeking out help.
This is why, Newcastle Eye Hospital have built a team of eye specialists dedicated to preserving your vision. Everyday a retinal surgeon is available to rescue eyesight with surgery, within the dedicated operating theatre.
Newcastle Eye Hospital is a fully accredited hospital with the Australian government and health funds. Everything needed to save eye sight is immediately available to patients, right here in Newcastle.
The macula is at the back of your eye. You cannot see it by looking in the mirror, so you won't know, just by looking if there is disease starting to develop there. This is why it is so important for every patient over the age of 50 to be having regular checks with their community optometrist.
The macula is essential to capture the light, and send vision back to your brain. It gives you your best quality vision. You see detail and read with your macula. Every day you can check your vision, one eye at a time, by simply covering the other one as you look in the distance.
Do this simple eye test every day when you brush your teeth. Do this now, as you read this. Is there a difference between your eyes? If so, get your eyes checked. See an optometrist. If you need to see our specialists, the optometrist will tell you.
It is important to check your eyes one at a time, because if one eye loses vision, the brain can trick you so that you do not notice the lost vision.
Every day, make good choices for your eyes. Do not smoke. Eat well and take regular exercise. Have plenty of fresh vegetables, particularly greens and eat fresh fruit. Have an orange. Every day.
