On advice from Port Stephens Council, all tennis courts across the LGA were closed on Thursday, August 12 - the day the NSW Government announced an extension to the week-long Hunter lockdown - to adhere to the NSW Government's stay-at-home order.
However, after consideration of the current public health order and how it applies to the regions, the council's COVID-19 management committee advised that courts could reopen to singles play this week.
Soldiers Point Tennis Club president Paul McQuarrie said the three courts in Soldiers Point Road had been busy from the "minute the courts were opened" on Monday.
"There's not much else people can do to get their exercise," he said. "Tennis is one of very few sports that individuals and families can play safely together from the youngest to the oldest members of our communities. Injury levels are low and the social aspects often mean that long lasting friendships are formed on the courts."
McQuarrie said all members of the community, whether they are a member of the club or not, can use its contact-less web-based booking system to secure time on the courts for one-on-one games. However, there are some conditions.
"Players have to check in with a QR Code, practice safe distancing and wear masks when not on the court," McQuarrie said. "Spectators are not allowed and only two people are allowed on each court.
"Racquets and balls are available for loan free of charge once inside the courts."
Doubles play and the club's popular social tennis groups will not restart until NSW Health regulations allow them to, McQuarrie said.
The courts are open between 7am and 10pm seven days a week.
Nelson Bay Tennis Club manager and coach Blake Denison said the public was welcome to book time on one of the Dowling Street courts.
Residents can book on site in person with cash transactions (tennis club members $10 per hour; non-members $20 for one hour and $10 for every hour afterwards).
Medowie Tennis Club's courts are currently open to members only.
Tilligerry Tennis Club's courts in Mallabula remain closed to the public.
"As well as being in lockdown we have a third court under construction which makes parking difficult as well as the noise and dust situation," a club spokesperson told the Examiner.
"We all look forward to getting back on the courts in the near future."
