David William King, 45, from Tanilba Bay was shot and killed in a quiet Salt Ash street in the afternoon of August 29, believed to be the result of a drug deal gone wrong.
Early investigations indicated a man with a gun was seen leaving the scene in a white Hyundai Santa Fe, the same make and model of a vehicle later found burnt out in Heatherbrae, which police believe is linked to the shooting.
As part of investigations, detectives on Wednesday released video footage of a man who was seen near the crime scene in Heatherbrae that "may have information that could assist police with their inquiries".
"It is not believed this man is linked to the death of David King," police said.
The man police are seeking to speak with is described as having short grey hair and wearing blue shorts and a striped T-shirt.
Police have also released footage of the vehicle found burning in Heatherbrae.
Emergency Services were called to Hideaway Drive, Salt Ash, about 1.45pm on August 29 following reports a white Ford Ranger utility had hit a tree.
Police and NSW Ambulance paramedics found Mr King's lifeless body next to the driver's side of the Ford. He had been fatally shot.
Investigators believe the gunman was a passenger in a Ford Raptor ute being driven by Mr King.
Port Stephens-Hunter Police District commander Superintendent Chad Gillies said that early investigations indicated a man with a gun was seen leaving Hideaway Drive, collected in a white Hyundai Santa Fe.
Police investigating the shooting seized a car in the Lower Hunter on October 12.
The white Holden Commodore was found on Maitland Road at Cessnock.
Police had the vehicle towed from the scene so it could be further examined.
Police said in a statement they seized several items, but they would not comment on what the objects were, specifically.
No-one has been charged over the shooting and investigations are ongoing.
