The 14-year-old Tomaree High School student was well spoken, polite, behaved and a good scholar - the makings of a fine radio presenter.
With some gentle prodding and plenty of encouragement, Taylor introduced Laura to Port Stephens FM and now the two spend three hours together on a Saturday afternoon hosting a radio show together.
Something Old, Something New was the program Laura thought up herself, wanting to play music from the '80s to now.
She debuted on October 25 and each Saturday since has put on a show with her mentor, Taylor.
"I take calls, requests and read community notices, gig guides, the weather, traffic reports," Laura said.
"I love all of it.
"I feel confident on air."
Taylor said Laura's training had come along in "leaps and bounds".
"Her diction and ability to select music across the various genres is impressive," he said.
Furthermore, Laura has not let her time volunteering at the community radio station interfere with her studies.
"Our agreement with Laura was that she could undertake training on the basis that it did not interfere with her school work," Taylor said.
"She kept her side of the bargain by topping her class in four subjects last year."
The pair will continue their program throughout 2015 with Taylor saying it would largely remain the same.
However, taking on public feedback, there might be more banter during the segment.
