Miss Corry, 19, will travel from Queensland's Sunshine Coast, where she now lives, to perform her duties for the area she grew up in and loves.

"I am very proud to be Australian and proud to be [a product] of Port Stephens," she said.

"I went to school at Anna Bay Public and St Phillip's and took my first swimming lessons at Tomaree.

"To be asked to return home from training is a tremendous thrill for me."

Miss Corry, who grew up in Anna Bay, is an Australian S14 swimmer.

At the 2012 London Paralympics she won silver medals in the women's 100 metre backstroke and women's 200 metre freestyle events.

She participated in a Rotary club fund-raiser to help cover her costs to compete at the games.

Her next major tournament is the Glasgow 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships in July, where she is hoping to compete in her two pet events - the 200 metre freestyle and 100 metre backstroke - as well as the 200 metre individual medley and 100 metre breaststroke.

"We are thrilled to have Taylor as our Australia Day ambassador in 2015," the council's communications section manager Ross Smart said.

"As a dual Paralympic silver medallist and a world record holder she is someone all Port Stephens residents are rightfully proud of.

"We very much look forward to her address."
