The sprightly retiree, who suffers from high blood pressure, also likes to keep herself fit and healthy - through pole dancing.
In just a few short weeks under the guidance of professional Nelson Bay instructor Judi Donlan, Ms Nicholls has come along in leaps and bounds.
"We have around 35 students aged from 10 to 78 (years) and in the short time Helen has been coming here she has mastered the art of performing an 'aeroboresque' [hanging from the pole upside down]," Ms Donlan said.
"She is quite amazing for her age and it just goes to show that pole dancing is for anyone, regardless of their age or size."
Ms Donlan, a 51-year-old grandmother who established her Poleverized business in Nelson Towers nine months ago, said the sport had come a long way since the days of stripclubs.
"Pole dancing has many benefits such as strength, flexibility, toning, confidence and friendship.
"My motto is 'enter as strangers, leave as friends'."
For Ms Nicholls, it is something she has wanted to try for a long time.
"It has that risque connotation to it but I'm here because I love it ... it can be hard work but it gives me great satisfaction and pleasure and it keeps me feeling young," she said.
"For the first time in decades I can now stand on one foot and cut my toenails without needing to bend over."
