So when a gardener from Wests Nelson Bay Diggers suggested she knit some poppies as a way to commemorate Remembrance Day she jumped at the chance.
“I said ‘you find me the pattern and I’ll knit it’.
“We found the pattern and away I went.”
The avid club member visits the Diggers club almost everyday, mostly to knit and play bingo. Much of what she creates is given away.
Her tribute to those who have served at times of war included 100 red poppies, an additional eight larger poppies for the Bay men who served in WWI and five purple poppies to pay tribute to the service of animals in battle. The sea of red was a touching tribute out the front of the club on Shoal Bay Road on Remembrance Day as returned servicemen and women gathered after formal ceremonies.
“Next year I’ll knit twice as many,” she said.
“It’s something I enjoy doing. I don’t drink or play the pokies, I just come here and knit.”
