Port Stephens Council will speak about the Nelson Bay discussion paper, including building heights, when it meets with the Tomaree Ratepayers and Residents Association on February 21.

The discussion paper – Progress of the the Nelson Bay Town Centre and Foreshore Strategy – was released to the public this week and considers the case for lifting the development ceiling.
The TRRA meeting is open to the public and its vice president, Dick Appleby, has encouraged people to attend.
“This is a rare opportunity for people to speak with council’s senior planners,” he said.
“Council’s agreed to give us the latest information on its town centre and foreshore review and we’re up for a debate about it.”
The discussion paper emphasises states that building heights should be reviewed to encourage development in the CBD.
“Some of the arguments for confining taller buildings to ridgelines appeal to us,” Mr Appleby said.
“As far as we’re concerned they could go to seven or 10 storeys on top of the hill near the Bunnings site.
“But we dispute what council says about building heights holding back the CBD, the GFC was a big factor.”
TRRA had also asked that the council delay a decision on the Ascent apartments proposed for Church Street. The project was again before the council on Tuesday night.
TRRA will convene its meeting 7pm, Tuesday, February 21, at Nelson Bay Bowling Club.
