Australian Bureau of Statistics data released in 2016 revealed that, across the country, rates of suicide are at a 10-year high. It is the leading cause of death for Australians aged 15 to 44.
To raise awareness about the statistics, funds for suicide prevention groups and to promote the benefits of undertaking physical activity for greater mental health, Anytime Fitness gyms around Australia are hosting 24-hour treadmill challenges.
Salamander Bay’s Anytime Fitness will host a 24-hour treadmill challenge on July 28.
“Many people don’t realise the strong connection between physical health and mental health,” Karen Short, Salamander Bay’s club manager, said.
“We hope that this worthwhile event will highlight this for our members, our staff and our communities.”
Money raised from the Salamander Bay challenge will be donated to Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network.
All member of the community, whether they are a member of Anytime Fitness or not, are invited to take part in the challenge.
The challenge will start at 6pm on Friday and end 6pm on Saturday.
The aim of the challenge is to have five of the gym’s six treadmills (one will still be available for members to use) with someone walking, jogging or running on them.
Participants pay $15 and hit the treadmill for 15 minutes. There is no limit on the number of times a person can book.
Bookings are being scheduled by the challenge coordinator, Traci Holland, to ensure the treadmills are being used at all times.
Two of the treadmills have been booked out by the Australian Defence Force and emergency services (police, fire, ambulance).
Suicide is particularly prevalent in the armed forces, and appears to be a strong motivator for ADF members to take part in the challenge.
Data by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, released in June, shows that at least 325 serving and former ADF personnel died by suicide between 2001 and 2015.
