Councillors unanimously backed the proposal in a motion put forward by Cr Jaimie Abbott.
“We will now approach the NSW government requesting a funding guarantee so ratepayers are not out of pocket,” she said.
“This plan is a genuine way forward for the state to make amends for past errors.”
“The focus is now on getting funding agreement from the state government so we can start the acquisition process.”
Last month mayor Ryan Palmer applauded a decision by the site’s owner to withdraw a proposed dual occupancy for the Salamander Bay site on Port Stephens Drive.
Cr Palmer will now write to Premier Gladys Berejiklian to seek a state commitment to help fund the buyback plan.
Cr Abbott conceded there are “no timelines” for these kinds of requests.
“But I am really hoping that Christmas can come early for Mambo wetlands,” she said.
