Such high regard was hard earned through many a sweaty gig in the 70s and 80s, belted out with other songs including Boys will be Boys and We’re Never Gonna Die, from a full catalouge.
Founder Mark Gable hasn’t forgotten his roots either, with those early days becoming the inspiration for a new album and tour, including a gig at Nelson Bay Wests Diggers on April 13.
“The pubs inspired and helped create all the great Aussie bands like INXS, The Angels, AC/DC, Cold Chisel, Men At Work and on and on,” he said.
“We called it pub rock way after the fact.”
Gable and his mates started in the 70s on the Northern Beaches of Sydney.
They didn’t call it pub rock in those days, but we were there in the beginning
- Mark Gable
“We had no idea what we were doing or where it would end up taking us – they didn’t call it pub rock in those days, but we were there in the beginning and we’re still here now.”
Choirboys enjoy a loyal following. Gable said it wasn’t just the music but the atmosphere they bring to the stage.
For seven years Choirboys have recorded every live show, and this collection of their classic original songs represents the sound and the band that Australia has come to know and love.
The band – including Ian Hulme, Lindsay Tebbutt and Brett Williams – are proud there’s no auto-tune, studio adjustment; just real live music, nothing held back.
Pub Rock 2017 takes listeners from the rebellious theme of Bullshit and the slow sexy groove of Fireworks, through their hits.
Gable said this was an album that celebrates more than the soul of pub rock in Australia but also the nostalgia of a bygone era that’s influenced contemporary Australian music.
Pub Rock 2017 is on sale now.
Tickets to their April 13 show are available through westsnewcastle.com.au
In the meantime, Wests Diggers has a treat lined up for the Australia Day long weekend.
The voice behind legendary Sunday morning radio show Australia All Over, Ian “Macca” McNamara, will play a show on January 27.
McNamara and his Gumboot Band will showcase songs that have touched him and his two million listeners throughout the past 35 years.
Tickets, available from the website or at reception for $44 per person.
