The fire, believed to have been caused by lightning last Monday, flared up on Saturday. The fire threat level has shifted from “advice” to “watch and act” to “emergency level” and back down again throughout the weekend.
Newcastle Airport cancelled all flights on Saturday, when the fire raced north from Tomago to Williamtown.
The airport began operating as normal on Monday morning. All flights have been resumed.
Additional flights have been scheduled by airlines today to help passengers of cancelled flights reach rtheir destinations. The airport advises passengers to contact their airline directly for information.
Firefighters will on Monday continue to create and strengthen containment lines. Backburning operations may continue today if weather conditions allow. Residents may notice an increase of fire activity when backburning is undertaken.
Crews are concentrating their efforts in Campvale around Richardson Road, Grahamstown Road and bush land to the south of Wade Close, Medowie.
Smoke from the fire is likely to blow towards Medowie and residents are reminded to only call triple-0 if they see an unattended fire.
Residents in the vicinity of Richardson Road, Grahamstown Road, Harvest Road, Pastures Drive, Medowie Road and Wade Close, Campvale, should continue to monitor the situation and take advice from firefighters on the ground.
Crews will continue to mop up and black out in the area of Barry Close, Cabbage Tree Rd and Massonite Rd and areas close to the Newcastle Airport.
Richardson Road remains closed between Benjamin Lee Drive and Medowie Road and is likely to remain this way overnight.
