Police investigating several shootings in the Newcastle area have charged four people.
Strike Force Calfs was formed by officers from Newcastle City Police District to investigate the shooting of a 24-year-old man in Allowah Street, Waratah West, on Wednesday 13 June 2018.
Following inquiries, officers executed a search warrant at Hastings Drive, Raymond Terrace, where they seized firearms, ammunition and cannabis about 3pm Wednesday.
About 4pm, a 20-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman were arrested outside a premises in Waterloo Avenue, Thornton, and taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station. The pair were searched and police seized cash, an electronic stun device, and cannabis.
The man was charged with 11 offences, including:
- possess loaded firearm endanger life non-public place;
- possess unregistered prohibited firearm (x2);
- possess unauthorised prohibited firearm (x2);
- possess ammunition without holding licence/permit (x2);
- not keep firearm safely;
- supply cannabis greater than indictable quantity;
- possess prohibited drug;
- knowingly deal with proceeds of crime.
He was refused bail and is due to appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court on Thursday.
The woman was charged with possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit, and two counts of use false identification information on carriage service to obtain air ticket. She was granted conditional bail and is due to appear before Maitland Local Court on Wednesday July 25.
Just after 5pm on Wednesday, a 33-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were arrested at Sydney Airport and taken to Mascot Police Station.
The man was charged with discharge firearm intend cause grievous bodily harm, possess unauthorised firearm, and possess shortened firearm without authority. He was refused bail and is due to appear before Central Local Court today.
The woman was charged with aggravated break and enter, and malicious damage. She was refused bail to appear before Central Local Court today.
The investigation continues.
INITIAL REPORT – 7AM
Detectives have made two arrests in relation to shooting at Mayfield West and Waratah West earlier this year.
A 33-year-old man was arrested as he departed a plane at Sydney Airport on Wednesday.
As police charged him, a second man aged 20 was arrested in the Maitland region and taken to Raymond Terrace police station.
He was also charged and police will allege the pair were involved in the two shooting incidents.
Newcastle City Police detectives have been investigating the April 30 incident at Buruda Street where an injured man was found about 5.30am after reports of the sound of gunfire.

He was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition and treated for a wound to his thigh.
The second shooting occurred on June 13 when a 24-year-old man was dropped at the Mater Hospital in Waratah, suffering gunshot wounds to his hand and shoulder.
Simultaneously, police were called to the intersection of Acacia Avenue and Allowah Street at Waratah West, after reports of gun shots.
Both men were bail refused and are due to face court on Thursday.
A Newcastle police spokesman said investigations were continuing and they were expecting to make more arrests.
