The Tomaree Multipurpose Centre was built within the Tomaree Education Centre as part of a significant joint venture between the NSW Department of Education and Training and the council in 1998.
Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer said the 20-year agreement has been positive for the entire community.
“This important community partnership between council and the school has ensured that both students and the community have access to high quality facilities,” he said.
“At the time, council contributed $600,000 to make sure the facility was of a high standard that would meet the needs of all users. The result has been a well-used facility that has enhanced the lives of students and the broader community.”
Tomaree High School principal Sue Xenos said students have benefited greatly from the agreement.
“The multipurpose centre is a key asset in assisting Tomaree Education Centre to identify, harness and develop the talents of our students,” she said.
“It has hosted many academic, sporting, musical, drama and cultural activities, as well as numerous presentations and seminars over the past 20 years.
“We are grateful for the initial and ongoing support from Port Stephens Council, whose project contribution allowed for the size and diversity of this tremendous facility.”
The agreement between the council and department of education will end on Saturday, September 29.
The school will continue to manage the multipurpose centre as outlined in the Department of Education Community Use of Facilities guidelines.
