The money was a result of the combined efforts by the Port Stephens and Tilligerry Torchbearers, both of which were represented at the gathering.
Port Stephens Legacy vice-president Forster ‘Fozz’ Breckenridge said the total raised was another outstanding effort thanks to a lot of hard work and a generous community.
“We are forever grateful for the tireless work of our volunteer torch bearers over many years,” he said.
June Wilkinson, president of the Port Stephens group for more than 12 years, said the money was raised through events such as bus trips and the hugely popular Christmas stocking, where raffle tickets are currently selling at the Soldiers Point Bowling Club.
“We are only a small group of volunteers and we are always looking for new members,” she said.
Tilligerry treasurer Lorraine Hall said torch bearers met monthly at Tilligerry RSL hosting luncheons and raffles throughout the year.
Other special guests at the luncheon included Gary Gent, president Newcastle Legacy, Margaret Estriech, president Port Stephens Widows Club, Tom Lipton, Nelson Bay RSL sub-branch, Noel Cartwright, president Tilligerry RSL, Bridgette Faulkner and Sheree Gemmell, representing Port Stephens Veterans and Citizens Aged Care (Harbourside Haven), Alan Barnes, president Nelson Bay Bowling Club, Jim Richardson president Soldiers Point Bowling Club, Jill de la Lande, Regis ‘The Gardens’, plus Tomaree High students Ben Anderson, Kim Doeun and Alyssa Hall.
