In the same week that direct international flights to Auckland (NZ) re-commenced after a 16-years break, the Williamtown-based facility which is jointly owned by Port Stephens and Newcastle councils was bestowed the honour of being named ‘Major Airport of the Year 2018’.
Virgin Australia will begin operation of a 13-week international service from November 22, just a week after the award was announced on November 15.
Airport of the Year is open to airports with more than 500,000 annual passengers that displays excellence in all aspects of airport operations and development.
Newcastle Airport CEO Peter Cock accepted the award presented by Australia’s peak airport body, the Australian Airports Association, at the National Airport Industry Awards ceremony held in Brisbane.
Mr Cock said that winning the highly competitive award was an achievement for the entire Hunter region.
“This achievement is a result of collaboration across so many sectors, including our RAAF neighbours, industry and tourism partners and loyal travelers who go smarter by starting their journey from Newcastle Airport.”
Newcastle Airport previously won the same award in 2011.
