Chief Inspector Tony Townsend from the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District said that while there will be a strong and visible police presence in the area across the holiday period, it was important that individuals took steps to minimise the risk of being robbed or harmed.
“Over the holiday period, with more people in the area and utilising car parks and other public spaces, it’s important that people secure their property,” Chief Inspector Townsend said.
“Police will be increasing patrols of these areas over the holiday period however, prevention the best way to avoid becoming a victim.
“Locking cars and ensuring any valuables are not visible from outside the car is important as stealing from motor vehicles is often an opportunistic offence.”
Another crime prevention tip police shared was minimise the number and type of items you take to the beach, in particular electronics such as phone, iPads and music devices, jewellery and cash.
Chief Inspector Townsend said residents and visitors to the area could expect to see a heavy police presence on the roads, and warned motorists to think about getting behind the wheel after having a drink.
“This is a time when people socialise and attend parties and where alcohol is consumed,” he said.
“Police encourage people to do so in a safe and responsible manner.
“Part of that is not drinking and driving.
“Random alcohol and drug tests will increase over the holiday period across the entire district but particularly in the Nelson Bay area.
“It’s important that our roads remain safe and that people take care to ensure they do not do anything that could compromise the safety of themselves and other road users.”
