There was a sense of déjà vu at Lorn Park on Sunday where for the third time in five years, and for the second year running, the Pythons faced Paterson for the major premiership.
Former Paterson skipper Rod Faulkner and 2019 captain Dean Bridges combined for a last-wicket partnership of 62 to almost pull off an unlikely A-grade grand final win.
Coming together at 9/89, Faulkner finished on 58 not out and Bridges was last man out for 25 as they fell eight runs short of Port Stephens' total of 159.
Faulkner came in with the score on 5/28 and lifted Paterson to 70 in a 32-run partnership with Nathan Mudd (20).
When two quick wickets fell to take Paterson to 8/72 it seemed defeat was only a matter of overs away.
However, Adam Kidd (6) and then Bridges stuck with Faulkner to reduce the target.
When Bridges was dismissed lbw the Port team rushed together in relief and joy to claim their sixth A-grade premiership in a row.
It was a thrilling finish for the Pythons who after losing the toss were asked to bat and at one stage were 6/89.
Shawn Davies (47) and Josh Beaven (31) led the fight back with the Pythons finally dismissed in the 40th over for 159.
Port Stephens bowler Brock Hawley who tore through the Paterson top order was man of the match.
Paterson was presented with the minor premiership shield after the game.
All three Pythons one-day sides - A, B and C-grade - played in their respective grand finals at the weekend.
Seaham Cricket Club had a dominant day with bat and ball at Robbins Oval to take out the B-grade premiership.
Port finished with 19 and were bowled out for 75.
Port faced Tarro Hotel Crickety Club in the C-grade grand final at Thornton. Both teams moved up a grade this season.
On the back of Nathan Humble, who carried his bat with 84 no, Port went on to post 2/167.
