A Port Stephens couple, calling themselves 'Where the West Meets the Coast', has just returned from the Riverina Redneck Rally raising much-needed funds for the charity Country Hope, which is a family-centered support organisation for children diagnosed with cancer and other life threatening illnesses.
The team's Shoal Bay driver, Darren James, and his partner managed to raise in excess of $16,000 in a total of $333,000 for the sick kids and their families.
"It was our first rally and a great experience driving the 1996 Toyota Camry donated by Port Stephens Toyota across dirt roads in three different states - NSW, South Australia and Queensland," Mr James said.
"We drove a total of 4700km over five days, starting in Balranald and finishing in Hay. Some of the more spectacular areas included the Flinders Rangers, Silverton, Cameron's Corner, White Cliffs and the Strezlecki Desert.
"We are already planning our rally for next year, which will finish in Nelson Bay."
Mr James said that the team would never have been able to achieve its massive total without the support of the Nelson Bay community.
"We managed to raise $5800 from the pig race day at Anna Bay Tavern. Other supporters included the Fingal Bay Servo and Coolair Auto Care," he said.
Next year's March rally will start in West Wyalong and finish in Nelson Bay.
