It's sage advice that has served Nelson Bay jeweller Steve Harding well.

"This was something my mentor, Russell Dove, told me that has really worked for me as I'm enjoying my business now more than ever," said Harding, who is celebrating 40 years as a professional jeweller in the Bay.

It's been an impressive ride for the owner of Bayside Jewellers in Magnus Street, who commenced his career with a watchmaking/jeweller apprenticeship in 1973 before completing four years at Sydney Technical College where he was awarded 'Watchmaker/Apprentice of The Year'.

Following a move to Nelson Bay in 1978 to secure "a better life for his children", Harding opened Bayside Jewellers in 1979 in the Cascade Walk before shifting 17 years later to his existing Magnus Street location.

A makeover of his Magnus St premises in October 2018 rekindled Harding's passion for his craft.

"The 2018 makeover did more than revitalise the business, it also served to revitalise me and the passion I've always had for my trade," Mr Harding said.

"I'm looking forward to continuing to provide the people of Port Stephens and visitors to the area with my professional services, as well as a unique selection of fashion jewellery and watches.

"I believe customers see value in a stand-alone retailer offering unique pieces, backed by extensive experience and good old-fashioned service."
