The applicant had sought to establish the camping grounds 47 The Bucketts Way, in addition to the construction of an amenities block, camp kitchen area, internal roads and associated servicing infrastructure.
A council report stated that the original application had called for up to 100 camp sites, which would permit the pitching of tents, and parking of caravans and camper trailers and the like for short term stays.
"As a result of public submissions and the need to comply with the requirements of council, NSW Rural Fire Service and Transport for NSW, the application has been reduced to 50 sites," the report stated.
Many of the neighbours to the proposed camping ground site have submitted letters and signed a petition of objection to the DA.
Speaking about the DA, Port Stephens west ward councillor Giacomo Arnott raised traffic safety concerns. He said The Bucketts Way had a poor record for traffic accidents.
"Buckets Way is one of the most dangerous roads in NSW, and community say it is extremely unsafe. Four wheel drives with caravans, Winnebagos, etc, are very difficult to maneuver along narrow roads especially coming out of driveways."
The council report identified key issues throughout the assessment of the proposal and as a result of public submissions "relate to the potential impacts of the proposal on the amenity of adjoining rural residential land, land use conflict, site access and environmental impacts".
The July 28 council meeting has been cancelled due to there being "no business to transact". The next meeting will be held August 11.
