Karuah Rural Fire Brigade, supported by the Medowie and Raymond Terrace Rural Fire Service brigades, were on Monday responding to "several escaped pile burns" along Swan Bay Road.
The fire, reported about 2.30pm, is under control and at advice level, however the responding brigades said "smoke will be around for some time".
"Variable and windy conditions mean things can escalate quickly, and that is why it is everyone's responsibility to be alert," the Raymond Terrace brigade said.
"Please contact fire control before lighting up," the Karuah brigade said.
NSW residents looking to burn on their property are required to contact their local fire control centre to alert the Rural Fire Service of the planned burn. A fire permit may be required.
A notice of a planned burn can be sent to the RFS through an online form or by calling the local fire control centre. For Port Stephens, the Lower Hunter Fire Control Centre can be contacted on (02) 4015 0000.
