Enjoying a splash at Nelson Bay beach on Tuesday morning were Sydneysiders John Speelman and his children, Javier, aged 4, and one-and-a-half year old Mia.
John was making his first visit to the Nelson Bay area in 15 years.
"After a hectic winter period we decided we needed a holiday away from Sydney and Port Stephens due to its close proximity seemed to be the ideal spot," he said.
"We booked a unit in Nelson Bay for one week and we intend to make the most of the fine weather forecast for the remainder of the week.
"I think we will be taking regular visits to the Nelson Bay playground and beach, a pub lunch and we are planning a dolphin watch cruise."
Sunday, September 27 was world tourism day, and with tourism among the hardest hit of all sectors by the COVID-19 pandemic, it stands as a timely reminder for Port Stephens locals and visitors to get out and enjoy some of the many activities and tours on offer.
Ian Boicos from the Anna Bay-based 4WD Tours R Us, said that there had never been a better time to support the local tourism industry.
"Being part of the tourism industry is exciting, showcasing unique parts of the coastline and key landmarks in the Worimi conservation lands are some of the highlights," he said.
"But this isn't only available to tourists. With international borders closed, why not be a tourist in your own town, by visiting some of the many local attractions, activities and venues."
