After identifying a need in the Tilligerry area, Komatsu Tomago organised the generous donation as part of their charitable 'Live Your Dream' initiative to go towards the refurbishment, landscaping and beautification of the Tanilba Bay drop-in centre (formerly Girl Guides Hall), licensed to Centre for Hope and ITEC youth.
The donation was coordinated by The Smith Family Communities for Children (Raymond Terrace/Karuah), which has been running some of its programs during the pandemic, and the cheque presentation was made during a morning tea held on September 30.
The Smith Family facilitates the delivery of a range of services and programs designed to improve outcomes for children aged 0 to 12 years old and their families through its partner organisations within the local community and through local schools.
"We aim to help build a strong, inclusive community that is supportive of all families living in the Port Stephens area," said The Smith Family's project manager Natasha Reece.
"With this donation we aim to rejuvenate the facility in the hope of providing a service hub for children and the families where they can meet for interaction, engagement and to enjoy some fun activities."
Komatsu, which has been supplying and supporting major industry in Australia since 1965, was represented by Todd Hutton and Scott Curtis.
"Every year the company donates $10,000 to distribute to a worthwhile local charity and this year we chose to partner with The Smith Family and Centre for Hope. We will also be providing volunteer staff to help out with the centre's refurbishment starting on October 19," Mr Hutton said.
Centre for Hope's founder Geraldine Moran said that the new-look drop-in centre would ensure the continued support of young people on the Tilligerry peninsula.
"Unfortunately, due to the pandemic we had to close the doors to the centre but it is out intention to be up and running again as soon as practical. The money will be used to refurbish and repaint the building and remodel the outdoor patio," said Ms Moran.
"We will continue to partner with The Smith Family and ITEC Youth to bring support services to the Tilligerry peninsula and we are grateful for the donation from Komatsu."
