Micro Business Boost has been launched by the Salamander Bay-based Spark CoWork with the support of Port Stephens Council for a six-month trial period.
The hybrid program, which aims to build connections, professionalism and resilience in micro businesses, comprises a series of events designed to support home-based micro businesses by incorporating online training and is supported by mentoring and networking.
It will be delivered in a combination of virtual and in-person events at the Spark centre located in Sandy Point Road (next to KFC).
Naomi Farrelly, co-owner of Spark CoWork, said that research had shown some of the key challenges for home-based businesses were isolation, networking and access to training and support.
"Having operated a home-based business, I understand this and wanted to create a program that works to overcome these challenges, connect local businesses, help them to build networks and support them to grow," she said.
"A different theme will be chosen each month and some of the topics covered include small business planning, creating a business mindset, understanding finances, marketing a business, getting a business organised and wellness for small business owners.
"Monthly webinars will be supported by discussion days, networking events and access to mentors and business advisers. Participants will also have the opportunity to access workspaces at Spark CoWork."
Workshops and support can also be accessed by home-based micro businesses across Port Stephens, stretching from Raymond Terrace and Medowie to Karuah, and include both Tilligerry and Tomaree peninsulas.
"The challenge for home-based businesses is that they aren't always visible to the local community, they are less likely to be a member of existing business networks and often are more connected to a global online network of entrepreneurs than in their own community.
"Through this program we want to uncover the myriad of amazing businesses and celebrate those that are operating in our own backyard."
Spark co-owner Beck Morley said that professional development and training had been identified by small business owners as an area in high demand.
"We see the program as a means of filling the gap in a way that is currently not being met anywhere else in Port Stephens."
Naomi and Beck established Spark CoWork in December 2017 as a meeting place and small business innovation hub, providing office space for a range of people from professionals and freelancers to travelers and remote workers.
