The waters both inside and outside the port offer fishing opportunities that are unique to this remarkable region.
It is the diversity in habitat from mangrove forests to sea grass meadows, shellfish encrusted rocky foreshore to off-shore reef systems that makes this place so special.
Islands, beaches, rivers and majestic headlands - we have it all.
It is because we are so rich in natural resources that Port Stephens does become a target, particularly in holiday periods, for those who do not share our concerns for the future.
Port Stephens is growing in popularity for numerous reasons and we, as a tourist destination, welcome visitors.
My concern is that our resources need far greater protection now than at any time in the past.

Wasn't it great to see the hundreds of sailing boats on the water last week?
It made me think back to when this community took on the State Government who were pressuring to claim 90 hectares of navigable Port Stephens water for an overseas pearl farming company.
Thankfully the community won the battle and the waterway remained public and recreational - as it should.
