Port Stephens Council said on Friday that the $130,000 replacement of the amenities block located near the Shoal Bay Road traffic lights had been completed and that works on a new shared pathway, landscaping and park furniture for the foreshore reserve were expected to be complete by August.

"The new amenities are now complete and are a vast improvement on what was there, thanks to a grant from the Crown Reserves Improvement Fund," Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer said.

"Work on the 2.5 metre wide shared pathway is about to get underway, thanks to our PS2020 project fund.

"This will make our waterfront more accessible for all, as there will be plenty of room for everyone on this new wider path."

The $505,000 pathway project will be undertaken by a sub-contractor. Works will include the removal and replacement of a section of the pathway and the installation of additional concrete connections at the entrance to the Shoal Bay jetty.

In a letter to businesses and residents, the council said there would be construction noise between the hours of 7am and 4pm on weekdays and 7am to 2.30pm on Saturdays and to expect the "unavoidable loss of parking in varying areas along the length of the foreshore".

"We'll be replacing some of the existing pathway and creating a new path in parts to maximise the grassed space for picnics. There will also be some earthworks and landscaping to create this new picnic area," Cr Palmer said.

The council said that during construction some beach access points may be temporarily closed and pedestrian detours in place.

During the same time as path construction, the $85,000 replacement of some park furniture in the reserve will be undertaken.

The new park furniture will be located near the new shared path. The improvements will include the installation of new shelters and beach showers.

"New park furniture and shelters are also on the way, giving plenty of beautiful places to stop, have a rest and take in the incredible scenery of Tomaree Headland and the port," Cr Palmer said.
