Following another COVID impacted year in 2021, Climate Action Port Stephens (CAPS) is preparing to elevate its campaign in 2022 starting with a community gathering in Nelson Bay.

CAPS is inviting everyone to attend a New Year's picnic on Sunday, January 16, at Fly Point Park, from 11am-2pm.
CAPS president Alisha Onslow said that locals and visitors were encouraged to bring a basket and blanket and enjoy a picnic with live music in the park with like-minded friends and families.
"Our aim is to plan, prepare for, and celebrate, a climate active 2022," said Ms Onslow.
"This will be a family friendly climate event to kickstart 2022 and to plan and prepare for a productive year for climate action in Port Stephens. Music will be performed by local singer-songwriter, Andrea Barnett.
"We also plan to re-activate our petition calling on the council to act on climate. It is expected that the wording will be determined by the people who attend Sunday's picnic."
CAPS, formed in 2019, campaigns for effective action by Port Stephens Council and the wider community to address the implications of climate change.
Last October council endorsed a notice of motion from Mayor Ryan Palmer to commit to carbon neutrality by 2025.
"We aren't immune to the impacts of climate change including increased sea level rise, intensity and frequency of storms, plus bushfire and rainfall patterns that are challenging the way we manage our environment," Mayor Palmer said.
Council said it would develop a roadmap to achieving carbon neutrally.
"We will undertake a review of current emissions to determine the baseline for our targets," natural systems coordinator Rean Lourens added.
"By committing to monitor our emissions on a regular basis and working with our community to develop a plan for the future, we will be tracking our success and developing the best outcome for our region.
Ms Onslow said that CAPS would be holding the newly elected council to task over climate action issues.
