The Examiner has over the past decade featured a number of articles from residents concerned about the safety aspect and poor state of Swan Bay road surfaces and claiming a lack of action from Port Stephens Council.
Now the residents of the untarred Lilleys Road, which intersects with Swan Bay Road at Swan Bay, say they are being ignored because of their remoteness.
"I believe this would not be an issue if it were in another part of Port Stephens ... we are completely ignored because of where we live," said resident spokesperson Shane Cox.
"Every time there is a weather event in the area the roads become dangerous and impassable. Our vehicles are suffering damage as a result.
"Currently there are giant potholes that traverse the entire road in multiple locations and each major pothole is linked by a series of smaller holes. Some parts of the road have running streams zigzagging across the road.
"I have made many attempts to report this to council and as of yet nothing has been done. As ratepayers we are tired of the council neglecting us and our needs, not to mention the safety aspect."
A council spokesperson said that regular road maintenance was undertaken across all roads within the Port Stephens LGA.
"The council has received correspondence regarding the number of potholes on roads including Lilleys Road due to recent rain events. Road maintenance including pothole repairs are prioritised and scheduled on a works program within the council limited source of funds. Works are prioritised based on the road traffic, road speed limits and level of risk."
According to Mr Cox, Lilleys Road needs urgent immediate attention.
"It is our belief that Port Stephens Council needs to enact some sort of plan to build a road that is able to withstand rain events that are so common to the area," he said.
"I have spoken to a number of people in council and to councillors and the response I receive is that the works have already been completed or that the works will begin sometime soon.
"This is not good enough and we are sick of having to complain multiple times every time the road is impacted due to rain. The road needs to be repaired, and seeded. We live in Swan Bay, we pay our rates, we deserve to be able to travel to and from our homes on safe roads without fear of damaging our vehicles."
