THE increase in numbers of visitors, scientists and volunteers coming to Broughton Island has spurred National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) to look at establishing a small management hut and storage area on the island.

NPWS Hunter region manager Robert Quirk said the proposed management hut would provide a base for staff and camp ground hosts to manage camping on the island in peak periods. It would also be used to accommodate researchers and volunteers who use the island to study threatened wildlife. To minimise the visual and environmental impacts of building, Mr Quirk said the hut would be located in the existing developed precinct at Esmeralda Cove, next to the seven privately owned fishing huts currently licenced to the Broughton Island Conservation Society.
"Located on the disturbed site of a past fishing hut, the NPWS facility will also provide a public information point for the large number of day visitors who land at this location before walking across to the spectacular vistas of North Beach," Mr Quirk said. Public comment is being sought on the proposed amendment to the Myall Lakes National Park Plan of Management. Copies of the amendments are available from the NPWS Great Lakes Area Office and at www.environment.nsw.gov.au/parkmanagement/MyallLakesPOMamend.htm. Written submissions must be received by The Planner, Myall Lakes National Park, NPWS, Locked Bag 99, Nelson Bay Delivery Centre, 2315, by Wednesday, April 18.
