THE Karuah Tea Gardens Sharks Cricket Club went down in under 12s at the weekend to Kurri Kurri, as did C grade versus Settlers from Dungog. Settlers batted first and got a good start posting 70 for the first wicket then another 50 for the second before the Sharks realised they were in a match. The drinks break provided a good opportunity for regrouping. This the Sharks did well. The wickets started to fall to some good tight bowling, with the Sharks taking the last eight for 80 runs. The bowling honours were shared by Aaron Oldersdorf (3 wickets), Brent Johnson, who made vital breakthroughs to get two wickets, and Jack Bills also took two.
The run chase in pursuit of 202 for victory didn't go to plan with the loss of early wickets. A handy partnership between Jim Drinkwater and Bob Ziehlkie breathed some life into the innings, however when Ziehlkie (21) was quickly followed by Drinkwater (34), the innings lost its momentum. Solid knocks from Aiden Bills and Jack Bills were not enough to worry the target and the Sharks were bowled out for 145.
