Rock fishing along our coastline is excellent, however you may have noticed over the numerous articles that I have written that I rarely encourage anyone to go rock fishing. The reason is obvious - rock fishing is a dangerous game that claims far too many lives.

NSW Government departments are currently considering how best to prevent the ongoing problem by consulting with rescue organisations and recreational fishing bodies. I feel the answer is becoming increasingly obvious: make the wearing of life jackets compulsory for all rock fishing along the entire NSW coastline. You have a greater chance of survival on the surface than under it.
Unbelievably, the decision-making bodies are considering making the wearing of jackets compulsory in only "the most dangerous areas". What nonsense. Every rocky outcrop, headland and rocky foreshore is dangerous. Consider those who risk their lives to rescue fishermen. I totally support the surf clubs and rescue helicopter crews who continue to call for the compulsory wearing of jackets.
