NSW SES Port Stephens unit cut the 17-year-old free from her hatchback after the accident at the intersection of Raymond Terrace and Seaham Roads about 11am on Tuesday.
She was flown to the John Hunter Hospital. The other driver, a man in a four-wheel drive, underwent mandatory testing following the crash.
Police said the teenager was in a critical condition after suffering multiple injuries.

It took emergency services more than an hour to free a teenager from a car crash on Tuesday.
The 17-year-old was travelling on Seaham Road when she was involved in a two-car accident about 11am. She suffered head and internal injuries in the crash.
Paramedics, Fire and Rescue, Police and SES were called to the scene.
The NSW SES Port Stephens unit had to use hydraulic rescue tools, including the jaws of life, to cut the woman free from the wreckage.
She was flown to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.

The NSW SES Port Stephens unit worked hard for more than one hour to free the woman from the car. She has since been flown, via helicopter, to John Hunter Hospital. She has serious injuries.
The crew had to use hydraulic rescue tools, including the jaws of life, to cut the woman free from the wreckage.

A woman, believed to be in her late teens, is trapped in a car after a two-vehicle accident on Seaham Road.
Emergency services were called to the scene at 11am on Tuesday.
The accident occurred near the junction of Seaham and Raymond Terrace Roads.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter has been dispatched, emergency services work to free the woman from the vehicle.
