Newcastle Airport, which has fluctuated between being open and closed since Saturday when the fire which began in Tomago flared up to emergency level, was operating as scheduled again on Tuesday morning.
The NSW Rural Fire Service gave Richardson Road, which had been closed between Benjamin Lee Drive and Medowie Road as firefighters battled fires at Campvale, the all clear on Tuesday afternoon.
As of 1.30pm Richardson Road was open to traffic. It was opened after crews removed dangerous fire affected trees.
However, a temporary speed limit of 40km/h will be in place on Richardson Road until smoke from the bushfire clears.
Backburing continued throughout Monday night, particularly on the north eastern side of the fire ground.
This work will continue throughout Tuesday afternoon as crews continue to strengthen containment lines ahead of warmer weather predicted for later this week.
Overnight, firefighter efforts were concentrated in Campvale south of Wade Close, along Richardson Road and on the northern side of the airport.
Due to the strong southerly winds, smoke from the fire continues to blow across the Medowie area.
Residents in the vicinity of Richardson Road, Grahamstown Road, Harvest Road, Pastures Drive, Medowie Road and Wade Close, Campvale, are advised to continue monitoring the situation and take advice from firefighters on the ground.
Crews will continue to patrol in the area of Barry Close, Cabbage Tree Rd and Masonite Rd and areas close to the Newcastle Airport. There have been some small flare ups in the Masonite Rd area overnight that crews were able to quickly deal with.
