The 35 year old pharmacist was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital on Wednesday with injuries to his hips and legs after a Toyota Corolla crashed through the glass wall of Amcal Plus in Salamander Bay Square about 8.15am.
The driver, a 71-year-old woman, was not injured.
On Friday, Amcal Plus Salamander Bay took to Facebook to thank the public for their “overwhelming concern” and well wishes.
“Christian would like to thank everyone for their heartfelt concern, messages and cards from our whole community,” the pharmacy said in its Facebook post.
“He is home with his family now and recovering well and will hopefully be back with the team next week.”
Mr Hernandez had been behind the pharmacy’s prescription counter prior to the store’s opening when the Corolla mounted the kerb and crashed into the pharmacy.
The car came to a stop where the pharmacist had been working moments before.
No other staff members were injured.
According to a Fire and Rescue NSW spokeswoman, Mr Hernandez had been trapped by the car behind a counter in a restricted space.
He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics.
NSW Ambulance Acting Inspector Luke Wiseman said Mr Hernandez had a lucky escape.
“He certainly got out of this really quite reasonably well considering one, how far the vehicle went into the pharmacy and two, he was actually trapped by the car,” he said.
About 9.20am Mr Hernandez was freed from where he had been trapped by the car.
He was taken by road to Tomaree Sports Complex and airlifted to John Hunter Hospital.
Pharmacist Ralph Kaiko told a television news station following the incident that Mr Hernandez had “no broken bones” but a “soft tissue injury”.
Once Mr Hernandez was freed, the car was removed from the shop.
The driver was breath tested at the scene, which returned a negative result.
The woman’s vehicle was seized for mechanical examination.
Inquiries into the incident are continuing.
