Raymond Terrace Aquatic Club is geared up to host its biggest powerboat racing event of the year – the annual trophy day.
“Trophy day is the highlight of the club’s racing for the year,” the club’s commodore, Greg Lewis, said. “Several sought after trophies will be up for grabs especially the Hunter Valley Championship.”
The club has been racing on the river through Raymond Terrace for 60 years.
Members open their race field up to competitors from Sydney, Windsor, Narromine and the Central Coast for the trophy day, which is staged in front of the rotunda in Riverside Park.
The course is oval in shape with straights of 600m. The powerboats travel at about 119 miles an hour, with speeds getting up to 200 miles an hour on the straight.
The 2018 trophy day will be held on July 1 between 9.30am and 3.30pm.
About 30 boats, of the outboard and inboard variety, are expected to compete on Sunday. Lewis said there will be plenty of action and speed to see on the day, with spectators encouraged to head down to the park to watch.
There is no cost to watch and refreshments will be available to buy.
A strong field of junior Formula Future boats for younger drivers aged from 8 to 16 years of age is expected on Sunday.
