Reflecting on a second season in which the Ravens made the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby League tag finals, second rower Denise Duffy said she was “proud” of the team.
“We’re really excited about the future of the Ravens,” she said. “We started out as a group of mums playing league tag for charity. This is our second season and the second year we have made the finals.”
The Ravens faced minor premiers Aberglassyn in the preliminary final at Lakeside on Saturday.
Aberglassyn, undefeated in two years bar a semi-final game against University two weeks ago, outgunned the Ravens 28-8.
“We were excited to get any points against them,” Duffy said. “We really fought hard.”
The Ravens had a team of 20 this year. Five members of the team have signed up to play for Raymond Terrace in Country Rugby League’s women’s nines tackle competition, starting in October.
Aberglassyn and University will go head-to-head in the A-grade league tag grand-final in Newcastle on Saturday. Mallabula Panthers will go up against Swansea in the B-grade grand-final.
“It’s really exciting to see Mallabula, Fingal Bay and ourselves all make finals,” Duffy said. “I think that shows shows the passion women in the area have for league.”
The Ravens and Magpies presentation night will be held in October at Lakeside Village Tavern.
